We're excited to announce a brand-new learning mode on English Whisper — Fill in the Blanks. After months of development and testing, this feature is now live for all users.
Traditional dictation asks you to type every single word you hear. It's effective, but it can be exhausting — especially for longer sentences. Fill in the Blanks offers a lighter, more targeted alternative: instead of transcribing the entire sentence, you only fill in the missing content words.
Each sentence is automatically analyzed, and roughly 40% of the words are blanked out. The blanks focus on meaningful content words — nouns, verbs, adjectives — while stop words and proper names are preserved to give you context. The selection is deterministic per video, so your experience stays consistent across sessions.
We observed that many learners, especially intermediate students, struggle less with hearing words and more with spelling specific vocabulary. Fill in the Blanks lets you:
💡 Pro tip: Use Dictation mode for challenging videos and Fill in the Blanks for quick review sessions or when you want to practice specific vocabulary.
Fill in the Blanks awards 0.6× EXP compared to full dictation. You can also reveal individual blanks if you're stuck, but revealing all blanks forfeits the EXP for that sentence — keeping the challenge fair while being forgiving.
