00:10First you have some time to look at questions thirty-one to forty on pages seven and eight. Thank you.
01:07Now listen carefully and answer questions thirty-one to forty.
01:15For my presentation, I'm going to talk to you about the archaeological dig I went on in the summer at the site of Trimera in southern Europe near the Mediterranean Sea.
01:27The site is backed by a range of mountains to the north, overlooking a green, fertile plain to the south.
01:35Let me first give you an idea of the history of the area and the growth of the city.
01:41The first evidence we have of human settlement in the Trimera area is of hunter-gatherers around twelve thousand years ago.
01:51Later, about five thousand years ago, farmers settled along the many rivers which cut across the plain, and later still,
02:00from about two thousand five hundred years ago, the city of Trimera was established, and it soon became a regional center for trade.
02:11The city was first invaded by the Greeks around three hundred BC then the Romans in one hundred BC.
02:20Under the Romans it became very prosperous and traded in grain olives and pottery Then in five hundred eighteen AD,
02:31an earthquake destroyed Trimera, and the city was abandoned.
02:36However,
02:38much of the city was covered with
02:40The
02:51first report on the ruins dates back to around seventeen hundred six,
02:57when a French explorer passed through the area.
03:00He thought that what he was seeing were the ruins of a castle.
03:06In the nineteenth century, a British archaeologist began to explore the site,
03:12and later a Polish count made the first map of the area and recorded some of the inscriptions which were visible on the surface.
03:23However, it was not until nineteen eighty-two that a Swedish archaeologist made a full survey of the ruins of Trimera.
03:33The first remains to be excavated were identified as those of the market.
03:38Archaeologists were trying to establish how trade was organized here, and the type of goods which were commonly bought and sold.
03:47In and around this area, various examples of silver coins have come to light.
03:55During the Roman period, it appears that the city was completely reorganized.
04:00The public squares were paved, as were the main streets.
04:06There is also some proof to suggest that textile production was an important industry.
04:13The huge prosperity during this period was helped by the fact that the city was responsible for provisioning the Roman army in the eastern region.
04:27Now what I'd like to do is talk about some of the more important buildings in some detail.
04:34First of all the Doric House This Greek building is located to the east of the city near the copper mines This building is where the local population
04:46would come to get their water The fact that the ruins were so well preserved has meant that the team of archaeologists excavating the site has been able to partially reconstruct the building
04:59The remains of a theatre are to be found in the northwest of the city, adjacent to the river, where a magnificent bridge made of stone has recently been unearthed.
05:11In Roman times, the theatre appears to have been extended and may have been able to take up to five thousand spectators.
05:20In the southwestern corner of the city are the remains of an elegant stairway.
05:25It dates back to about thirty-seven AD.
05:29The stairway is decorated with sculptures of lions as opposed to bears found in other parts of the site.
05:37This is possibly because of trading links with Africa.
05:43Finally, the most recent discovery has been at the site of the Roman baths, in the central area of Trimera.
05:50Here, a huge statue of an emperor from the Roman period was excavated.
05:56It appears to have been carved in pieces and then taken to the site and put together.
06:03The statue is very finely detailed, and the recent discovery of marble toes and the hem of a dress suggests that a companion statue may also be buried in the bath's site.
06:17During the dig, I was responsible for many...
